Rhoasted Birdseye Maple and Rhoasted Curly Maple

I received my Birdseye Maple and Curly Maple back from a kiln that has the ability to rhoast the wood, I chose a few small projects to be able to show the outstanding look of the wood. This week at the Halifax Seaport Farmers Market I will have Picture Frames in these woods along with Bread Knives. Stay tuned for Trinket Box's, Keepsake Box's and Bread Boards in these woods, which can be ordered online as we ship world wide or at the Market on Satrday's, I am on the 2nd level.

Lazy Susans, Trinket Box's and the Quadra Cut Bit

Yesterday in the shop I finished three amazing Lazy Susans, one is Lacewood & Nogal, one in Curly Cherry & Nogal and the final Birdseye Maple & Bloodwood, they look amazing even with no finish, images will be added to the website later in the week.

This week is get orders finished and build a stock up of trinket boxes in domestic and exotic hardwoods.

In the shop we use spiral cutterheads which for the most part eliminates tear out in highly figured hardwoods. When it comes to routing a profile in these woods it can be a real challenge, well that was until I read about the Frued Quadra Cut router bits, in short they have four cutters, two up and two down (read up on spiral up cut and down cut bits, same idea) Well I tried the bit yesterday in curly cherry which can at times show burn marks due to the high sugar content and it’s prone to chip, the results with the new bits was shocking. No tear out at all and the profile is like glass, very pleased.

Stay tuned for more images and updates.

Lazy Susan's

Today in the shop was working on hinged picture frames however I have a few 16” Lazy Susan’s glued up and would like to have them in time for the Seaport Market on Saturday as the Canada Winter Games start tomorrow and there are a lot of visitors who will visit our market.

Below is an image of a completed Lazy Susan, I will be adding images of solid Birdseye Maple, Roasted Birdseye Maple, Roasted Curly Maple and Curly Cherry in the coming weeks. For now, based on history the best sellers are those that have a combination of domestic and exotic hardwoods.

Stay tuned as tomorrow I will post images of our Hinged Picture Frames and 8 X 10, 5 X 7 Roasted Curly Maple which are just stunning. In the coming weeks I will write an information Blog on what Roasted wood is and why it is done.

Review

Here is a quick update to February 9, 2010

I wanted an easy way to keep visitors informed about what our small company is going and things that may be of interest.

This past Sunday I opened a Twitter account and it's called Oakridgewood

Our company will be at the Seaport Farmers Market during the Canada Winter games which is being hosted by our city, Halifax NS. We are located on the second floor.

Years ago I offered many products that sold very well at the market however with other companies that I worked at or run I slipped into the basics of what I would make and bring due to time constraints.

Things have changed and I will be bringing many of these projects back, they will include things like Rolling Pins with exotic wood handles (maple or cherry centre), Pepper Mills which were a very big seller, Lazy Susans and after today I will have a few hinged picture frames.

For hinged frames I am working on Birdseye Maple, Cherry, Nogal and Padouk. I will have them in 5 X 7, 4 X 6 and 4 X 5, as time allows I will add more woods.

Thank you for reading, I am always happy to share information even if you do not plan to buy something, feel free to contact me and ask away.
